About NFI Massachusetts
NFI Massachusetts has been serving communities in Essex and Middlesex counties for decades. As a 501(3)C organization we are focused on creating community-focused solutions to issues facing the most vulnerable members of our communities. Using industry best practices our trauma-informed care is designed to help everyone reach their full potential and live fulfilling lives in their communities.
Our Beginnings
North American Family Institute (NAFI/NFI) was founded by Dr. Yitzhak Bakal in 1974, focusing on rehabilitating and reforming the youth justice system in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Operating out of a garage in Malden, MA, NFI was focused on creating community-based alternatives to residential shelters, group homes, treatment centers and education programs. As NFI grew and spread to other states and regions, NFI Massachusetts continues that legacy to this day, servicing and supporting the Commonwealth and ensuring everyone can reach their full potential and thrive in their communities.
