Located at the Worcester Recovery Center & Hospital, NFI’s two, fifteen bed IRTPs are state-wide residential programs for adolescents who have a serious mental illness and/or severe emotional and/or behavioral disturbances. The two programs provide vigorous treatment in a locked setting for youth who are unable to be safely treated in a less restrictive setting. The programs are highly resourced with highly trained and credentialed staff which include child psychiatry, nursing, occupational therapy, clinical services, in-house education and therapeutic milieu. Youth are referred by the Department of Mental Health (DMH). The program is structured in a trauma-informed, family focused environment. Both the D1 and D2 units utilize peer mentors as a support to the youth placed; peer mentors are staff that have lived experience in program placement and have gone on to fulfill their educational and professional goals, and work part time supporting youth at the IRTP on the path to recovery. The therapeutic milieu and educational day programming are designed to foster success after transition out of the program.

NFI’s North Shore Continuum is looking to hire a master’s level clinician to provide home-based treatment for youth and families involved with DCF and/or DMH. The North Shore Continuum (NSC) embodies the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) and DCF’s and DMH’s vision of Caring Together as a comprehensive fully integrated array of community based service options for youth and families. Services include congregate care, home/family-based services, intensive foster care and pre-independent and independent living services. Through this contract we serve the Salem and Lynn areas and provide 25 slots for males and females ages 5 through 18 with complex mental health and behavioral challenges.

The clinician is part of an intensive multidisciplinary team that delivers treatment and outreach; a comprehensive assessment of family strengths, needs, and culture; treatment planning; family systems therapy; skills training; care coordination; and crisis intervention with on-call responsibilities. All NSC team members are all trained in the ARC treatment framework as well as the Wraparound Process for engaging youth and families in treatment.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLINICIAN

This program provides home based treatment, community based outreach, comprehensive assessment and intensive in home family therapy, case coordination and crisis intervention services for youth and family. Foundations For Families uses a team based approach which includes Clinicians, Case Managers, Parent Partners and Mentors, allowing for services and service intensity to be highly individualized to meet the unique and varying needs of each family. Clinicians also work collaboratively with a variety of collaterals in the community including schools, outpatient mental health, psychiatric providers, state youth/family serving agencies, probation, and a wide variety of other community resources, providing an excellent opportunity to explore different areas of the social work field.

Foundations For Families staff are trained in using the Attachment, Self-Regulation and Competency framework in our clinical work with youth and families, and how to apply that framework in working with youth/families in the home based setting. Clinical staff are supervised by a licensed clinician with an emphasis on professional growth.

The Clinician/In-Home Therapist will work in the Merrimack Valley (Lowell, Haverhill, Lawrence, surrounding towns) area primarily with youth referred through the Department of Children and Families (DCF), the Department of Mental Health (DMH), and CBHI (IHT). The Clinician/In-Home Therapist will largely provide family therapy and clinical case management services to 8-10 families.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

Qualified applicants will have a solid understanding of:

The primary role of the Family Engagement Specialist is to increase and maintain engagement with DYS youth and their families. The Family Engagement Specialist will assist DYS casework staff in identifying strategies for engaging youths’ families as an effective means of reducing recidivism, improving family relationships and increasing positive educational, employment and treatment outcomes leading to successful discharge from DYS. The Family Engagement Specialist will work with youth and their families throughout the DYS continuum based on individual need and will implement initiatives to promote and maintain family involvement throughout the region (Lynn, Lowell, Lawrence, Haverhill).

Role and Responsibilities:

  • Assist DYS casework staff in increasing family engagement during a youth’s involvement with DYS and, when appropriate, provides time limited, direct family contact in an effort to maintain community tenure and reduce revocation events.
  • Assists DYS Caseworkers in skill building related to effectively engaging families, providing feedback regarding their own observations in examining the family.
  • Is knowledgeable of, and has linkages with, the Massachusetts’ Behavioral Health Partnership’s (MBHP) managed care entities and family services providers in the region.
  • Is knowledgeable of, and provides active support to, caseworkers for youth and families receiving services under the Commonwealth’s Children’s Behavioral Health Initiative.
  • Work with families to identify their individual needs that may extend beyond the specific needs of the youth. For example, the Family Engagement Specialist will be expected to identify and help facilitate referrals to needed services for parents and to assist families in the identification of and connection to community-based resources.
  • Assists the DYS caseworker in ensuring youth are prepared for discharge from DYS

Specific Duties:

  • Attend specific content area training opportunities (e.g. Family Systems training) as requested by DYS to enhance engagement strategies.
  • Leads or assists in the implementation of family-focused initiatives in the region as requested by DYS.
  • Attend home visits with DYS caseworker to increase family engagement.
  • Attends transition and release planning meetings for all youth being released from long term placements and provide consultation and contribute to aftercare planning with feedback from the family.
  • Assist in the development, coordination and implementation of Family Orientation materials and sessions.
  • In collaboration with the DYS caseworkers works with families to identify additional positive supports – either familial or in the community – in an effort to enhance and broaden the locus of support for families and youth. This may be accomplished through the use of genograms and ecomaps.
  • Transportation of youth and families may be required.
  • Data entry and documentation of engagement efforts required.
  • Attends inter-agency / external stakeholder meetings as needed (e.g. Systems of Care meetings).
